HOW TO REACH FULL FUNDING

Since 2014, the Legislature has had a roadmap from nearly 200,000 signers of Initiative 42 petitions on how to responsibly reach full funding for Mississippi schools. It’s a phase-in using growth in the state budget, not new taxes or cuts to state agencies.

“ADEQUATE” FUNDING

In 1997, the Legislature decided how much is “adequate” funding when it passed the Mississippi Adequate Education Program. It’s a law that’s been kept only twice since then.

ACCOUNTABILITY

No legal action will be needed for full funding if the Legislature abides by the constitutional change caused by passage of Initiative 42. If the Legislature refuses, the Mississippi Supreme Court will have the final say in the issue, which by law must begin in Hinds County.

THE ALTERNATIVE

The Legislature has had 18 years to “perfect” a plan and fully fund its commitment to K-12 education. The Legislature’s “decoy” alternative contains no plan for additional funding and changes nothing for our children to succeed.

We must stop short-changing our children. Over the last six years, underfunding of the Mississippi Adequate Education Program has resulted in a $1.5 billion  shortfall in funding for the education of our children. The consequences of this  are numerous, from low educational attainment to an inability of our state to attract family-sustaining jobs.
